Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Jiu Jitsu and other martial arts?

Unlike martial arts that teach striking and kicking, Jiu Jitsu is primarily focused on defending yourself against a violent aggressor.

Since most fights take place on the ground, Jiu Jitsu includes techniques for escaping from a dangerous position on the ground (for example, being flat on your back with someone larger sitting on top of you) and neutralizing an attacker without causing any lasting physical harm.

Will I be able to keep up in the class if I have no previous experience?

Absolutely. All our group classes follow a clearly outlined curriculum which emphasizes fundamental techniques that are both practical for self-defense and provide a solid foundation for a more advanced Jiu Jitsu game.

This approach allows beginning students to learn while at the same time more advanced students will deepen their knowledge and application of these techniques.

Am I too old / out of shape to do Jiu Jitsu?

You don’t need to already be in shape; doing Jiu Jitsu will help you get in shape!  Many of our students enjoy Jiu Jitsu as a form of exercise that is engaging mentally as well as physically.

We welcome students of all ages and have trained many adult beginners in their 40’s, 50’s, and older.

How physically demanding are the classes?

Our group classes include times when you’ll be watching and resting in addition to practicing and drilling. The classes are suitable for men and women of all ages and fitness levels, but feel free to take a break or drink water if you need to.  We won’t embarrass you or pressure you to do anything that makes you feel unsafe.

What are the classes like?

Adult Jiu Jitsu classes last one hour and usually begin with a few minutes of basic warm-up movements, followed by some self-defense techniques before progressing to work on the ground.

Techniques are taught one step at a time, with time for you to practice each step with your partner before advancing to the next step.

The class ends with live drilling, which is always tailored to individual experience levels.  We will make sure you feel safe at all times.

What should I wear to class?

We will provide a gi (training uniform) for you to borrow during your free trial period.  We have a private space for you to change as well as a shower if you are headed to work after.

Most students wear a t-shirt or rash guard under their gi top, and underwear or compression shorts under the gi pants.

What should I bring with me to class?

Many students bring a water bottle.  A cup and mouth guard are required for striking classes, but not for Jiu Jitsu classes.  We have an area where you can store your belongings while you train.

Who will be my training partner?

For your first class, you will be matched with an experienced training partner who will know how to help you and keep you safe.

Which class should I visit, and how often do I need to attend?

We offer adult Jiu Jitsu at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. most weekdays.

All of our classes are appropriate for beginners as well as more advanced students, and because our adult Jiu Jitsu classes all follow the same curriculum, you can come to class at whatever time is convenient to you without worrying that you’ll be missing out.

We do recommend that students attend at least three classes per week in order to make consistent progress.

Are there any rules or etiquette I need to know about?

No need to bow or call anyone “Sensei” – “Coach” is fine.

Please remove your shoes and socks before stepping onto the mat, but we ask that shoes be worn in the restrooms.

Do I need to register before coming to my first class?

We will need you to sign a waiver before your first class.  You can do this online, or you can come in a few minutes early and sign one in person.

You can register for your five free classes online in advance, or we can help you register when you come in.
